Description

Izinzer is the cockchafer (cok-a-fer) a beetle native to Europe and the Middle East. It is a symbol of movement, rotation, and take-off, perfect for those starting a new enterprise or looking for forward movement in their lives.

A collection of people moved into Northern Africa some 10,000 years ago from Egypt and Ethiopia, settling in what is now Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and some of Libya. These people call themselves the Imazighen, the “free people.” Known commonly as Berbers, they have a strong and fierce tradition of magic and mythology that is slowly eroding in the modern era.

Rebecca Oubouzar took up the traditions of her husband’s family, researching the symbolism and astrology of the Algerian Imazighen (the Kabyles) and recreating the symbols in bright acrylic paints on molded clay pendants. A silver-plated bail is attached and strung with a 26” satin ribbon in a contrasting color. Each pendant is approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter and carries the artist’s mark and year on the back.
